Continuing from where we left. My boyfriend and I tried to see as much as we can during the weekend and this was our final stop, before I headed back to PJ.
We went to China House to see the ‘Songsang’ exhibition. It was exhibiting artworks from selected top Malaysian Comtemporary Artists. It was disappointing that the China House didn’t know didn’t know of their own exhibition in their own place. We kept asking around until one of them was “Ohh, Songsang? You mean the exhibition? Just go upstairs?”
Here are some of the works which I like:
Artist: Umi Baizurah Mahir@Ismail
Title: Family #6
This porcelain artwork is a little creepy, because it just show how the body is out of proportion. Small heads on one feet. To me, I feel that this artwork is about being family. You can be all made with porcelain, but you have different influences in life, whether it is liberal or conservative.

Artist: Ahmad Zakii Anwar
Title: Standing Figure #21
This work reminds me of Bayu Utomo Radjikn work (read the post here). The details of the human body is amazing as you really have to notice how the light falls on the body. This also reminds me of the greek sculptures from Lourve when they had their exhibition in Singapore. It’s amazing how some people have very good eye for detail.

Artist: Rafie Ghani
Title: In the Beginning
This was one messy artwork and it was a topic with my boyfriend about abstract paintings. Most people who do not study art or design would have dismiss this painting and not think much about it, thanks to commercialism. Anyway, I was discussing with him about the symbols he might use, and questioned why he use those symbols and elements to describe the ‘In the Beginning’.
I wonder if the bright blue part of the painting represents the end of the journey, or the beginning of the journey. It could go two ways, I think.

Artist: Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin
Title: Nafas 19
I really liked this sculpture. Though it doesn’t look human but I like how the artist had sculptured it to look as though there’s movement. See, we should implement works like these in movies. Look at our local movies. If they want to do a sci-fi movie, they rip off from Transformers and kamen riders. This piece is really original and imagine if you put it in movies.

Artist: Hasnul Jamal Saidon
Title: Kandang Kambing Kandang Harimau
This is a video projection with reflection holography. I think this piece shows about the life of a married man delving into different things in life, and you can see what influences his life. Arts, The United States of America, Malay influences, just to name the few.

Artist: Abu Bakar Idris
Title: Bila Sendi pun bercerita tentang Cinta pada Solat I & 11
I really like this ‘dawn’ looking piece. Muted and organic at the same time. I like how there are branches leading the eyes, and the little details at the back are like wind blowing through the branches. Now I wonder, does the ‘wind’ in the painting shows that it whispers secrets, like how the reeds whispered about King Midas’ donkey ears in the greek story.

Artist: Tom Powell
Title: Small City
Nice map of George Town. A nice style to think about when doing my next design.

We walked around and we saw his ‘hidden’ area. It is not quite hidden but they didn’t block the area or anything and we saw other artworks which were not labelled or unwrapped. Managed to find two artworks which I like, but am not too sure who are the artists though.

And I really love this retro signboard across the road.

And this ends my posts on Georgetown Festival 2012 and I’m proud that I managed to write this post two weeks after I went to Penang, instead of dragging this post up to a month later.
