Art Exposition 2011

This is a very outdated post about Art Exposition.

Here are my excuses why this is outdated:

  1. Wasn’t in a mood to do this post, especially when I went for the exposition sick.
  2. Too lazy to crop pictures.
  3. Took photos with iPad which the quality wasn’t good.
  4. Was sneaking in pictures as they say photography was not allowed but ended up seeing all the dslr people shooting so many pictures.

Anyway, no time for excuses and for my new year resolution, I must make sure that after I attend any conferences, expositions, exhibitions, I must blog about these events within a week, completed with images and descriptions. Many designers have said that writing is important because it helps to formulate thoughts.

Blindspots – Dance with me by Queenie Chow
I really love its pastel colours as it is very pleasant to look at. I also liked the style of the illustration and somehow it reminds me a little of  Yoshitomo Nara work.

Saudara series by Bayu Utomo Radjikn
Here is the description that I read:

“Saudara” is a probe into the psyche and journey of self. a medium for deliberation and self-reflection, about one’s inner search and summoning of strength. we have all embarked upon our own individual journeys and each posesses within us a ‘warrior’ that is waiting to be discovered or wielded.

I really love how they use black and white. The power of using black and white in paintings and photographs train us to see contrast better after you strip all the colours away. Then you will also realised what is distraction, and what is main focus. This realism painting has really deep contrast thus the series looked really dramatic. It was as though he used a spotlight to create such lighting for such an art piece. I also like the use of the red thread (can’t be really seen in this photo) as a subtle highlight. Why red thread? His paintings are also very textured. Does the textures indicate that he is very much an alpha male? Even if it is not about alpha male, but also the meaning of rawness?

Bathing Beauty by Aung Thiha
I like the background. Firstly, I like how it shows the depth of the image. The bokeh style show the trees further away, and the lighter green in front shows the bush nearer to the lady. Looking at the clothes, I was trying to assess her personality through the clothes. If those clothes were hers, why does she have them?  I think what is more striking was the yellow bra. That is not a common bra colour.

My daughter’s dress by Jonson Pasaribu
This piece is really simple, and yet when the first I saw it, I was attracted to it. Firstly it is the bold orange colour. I also liked the simplicity of the dress. The hanger was rather unique as it is a shape of a house. Is this a house dress? Does this dress brings back memories of childhood and home?

Some art piece by Soe Soe
This is only part of the painting that I shot. This is one of the most attractive art work found at the exposition and many people surrounding the art piece. I love how the artist painted these rice fields like 3D. The artist made the rice fields look really bright and green together with its contrasting orange flowers. The artist created the textures using acrylics. Awesome.

Blue & Green by Song Wei from Singapore
Also a partial shot of paintings of bells. They look really shiny and realistic. I like how the artist painted the bells to reflect on each other. I find it hard to do reflections thus looking at this makes me go, “Wow!:

Falling Slowly by Mimi Tescon
A mix media piece, I enjoyed looking at the little stuff in there with highlights of blue.

My Lump by Daishi Domon
The colours and illustration reminds me a bit of Katamari Damacy. I can almost imagine the Prince rolling its magical ball.

Kowei from Taiwan
I like Kowei’s illustrations but this is the only bad shot I have about the illustration.

Buckethead by Jui Pin Chang from Taiwan
I like how the artist translate his/her thoughts into newspaper articles and paintings. Most of them do not have a face, but I do like its interpretation of the black and white queen. Let me find out more what is a Buckethead. But overall, I felt there is a story going on but I was too sick at that point to think what the story is all about.

Little girl series by Wang Zhijie
Fuh, bright psychedelic  colours with super huge scary eyes, glossy red lips and green sharp fingernails. If you read about cartooning and human body ratio, children have bigger heads compared to adults. At the first glance it looks like a girl but with the glossy red lips and green fingernails suggest otherwise.

Love the bright colours but the cosmetics are overdone.

The Kiss by Wu Mingzhong
I think we have seen a lot kissing pictures but I found it intriguing is how he made humans transparent like bottles and it show when two people kiss, what actually happens. I think that a kiss is not just a kiss. There is something that goes on in between two people.

Love by Liu Gang
Here’s the description that I read there:

How do you look at body and skin is the matter of perpective. some think of it as the body’s major organ. Others look at skin as a biological map of the history oh humanmigration patterns. Many ppl like it pretty but to me, it’s an art to tell my story.

We coloured people but essentially, we are made to love and receive love.

World of rice, no. 6 by Zhang Tuo
Description on this piece:

Frequently, rice is used as a metaphor associated with importance, a basic necessity, wealth, contentment and happiness. To me, rice is a bridge that brings the true traditional Chinese culture into the Western world. it is basically a grain of chinese soul.

The rice look so real. Now looking at this painting, I feel like playing with my rice and soy sauce to create art.

The Season of Love – Autumn Ray by Narate Kathong
I love autumn colours and the sun rays. Somehow pictures with sun rays are just beautiful and appealing.

Grand mountain and tree top by Saenkom Chansrinual
I love the textures and how it was done to make it look metallic. The artist also did a gold version which was also impressive

Top stylist by Suwandi
Forgive me for the badly cropped image, but this is a set of three and what caught my attention was the durian head. I wonder what that means.

Melinda Looi
As much as she is known as a fashion designer, she is also an artist. She is the only one in the art expo who came up with an installation instead of painting. Love that intricate dress but the talking mannequin face was slightly scary because the mouth could move. The moving mouth was actually a projection and it mouth were just talking about fashion and art. Most people who went there talked about her work… just because it one of the very few installations. Want to make the whole expo more memorable. Do more installations like how Singapore Art Museum does it.

So this ends my post on the Art Exposition. Again, forgive me for not doing proper homework or writing better thoughts about each art piece, but I will improve from this post.
